Bitcoin Exchange Hacked for Nearly $9 Million

One or more hackers have hit Mt. Gox, the world’s largest exchange for the increasingly popular cryptocurrency known as Bitcoins. The damage: as much as $8.75 million, as well as a huge blow to the confidence of the growing worldwide network of users.

Information concerning approximately 60,000 accounts listed on the exchange’s database was taken, and shortly afterward 100,000 Bitcoins were sold — with an accompanying plummeting of the value.

The Mt. Gox admins quickly took the accounts offline, disabled logins, and rolled back all trades. Asof this writing, the exchange is still not online, although updates promise a 2am GMT relaunch, with a thorough account recovery process for all affected users…
