Dent: Keep Jake Towne out of debates

The campaign of Republican Charlie Dent said Friday any debates this fall that include a third-party candidate who has supporters in the tea party movement would be a “major stumbling point” for Dent’s participation.

Independent candidate Jake Towne, who denounced the Lehigh Valley congressman’s objection, was once a Republican and has promised to rein in social spending, helping him gain fans among the tea party activists Republicans have been careful not to alienate.

While the Democratic challenger, Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan, wants Towne included, Dent believes a three-way debate would not help voters draw distinctions between the clear front-runners in the 15th Congressional District race.

“We don’t think that John Callahan should be afforded the opportunity to hide behind Jake Towne’s presence at any potential debate,” said Shawn Millan, Dent’s campaign manager. “Callahan’s desire to have Towne at debates only indicates his unease over facing Rep. Dent head-on.”
